A Stop for Classic Cars

This roadside museum, just off I-81 in Staunton, Virginia, makes a fun diversion for car lovers.

There was a time when you would have found Petie Havers racing his red 195 7 Chevy Twister on the tracks around Virginia. Now you'll likely find him at the Havers Classic Car & Collectibles Museum just south of Staunton.

A fancy sign, which bears a likeness of a 1954 Corvette, towers over the highway and acts as a beacon for classic-car lovers. Inside the museum, a bright red Corvette leads the way to a hall of cars belonging to Petie and his cousin Guy.

Petie says his most prized possession is the white 1954 Corvette his father gave him. The collection also includes a 1978 Indy 500 pace car; a 1957 Thunderbird; a red, white, and blue 1965 Plymouth driven by legendary racer Ronnie Sox; and a 1976 Cadillac, the last car Elvis bought before his death.

When this property came up for sale, Petie bought it because he and Guy needed a place to put their cars. Having others enjoy them is just a bonus. Petie says, "I just want people to remember the good old days-the way it was."

Eavers Classic Cars & Collectibles Museum: 402 Folly Mills Station Road, Staunton, VA 24401; (540) 337-1126.
